Matthew has a BM in Music Education from George Mason University. At George Mason, he performed with many ensembles including the Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Mason Percussion Group, and various chamber ensembles. Outside of the University, he has performed with the Rappahannock Pops Orchestra, Festival Pops Orchestra, and the Raiders Drum and Bugle Corps.

“Teaching music has been a very positive experience for me. Although I originally planned to pursue a performance degree, I realized that teaching was my true passion. The most influential people in my life have been my music teachers, and I hope to spark the same passion in my students that my teachers imbued in me. Music education is about bringing joy to students’ lives, and I look forward to continuing to cultivating  that joy in my classroom every day.”

Elementary Music

Matt will teach the basics of music to students through performing. Students will sing and play games that allow them to explore music in all it’s depth and details. Students will be exposed to different instruments and different styles of music throughout the year. Students will use solfege to develop an internalized sense of pitch that is accurate and applicable to any musical setting. Rhythm will be emphasized in specific games and through reading and writing rhythms. Literacy will be developed through exposure to written music.

Toddler and primary Music

Matt will be exposing young students to the basics of music through performing. Students will learn to match pitch and rhythms through singing and games that are particularly conducive to a Montessori environment. Kinesthetic skills will be developed to be able to synchronize with a group. Individual confidence will be built through opportunities to perform and share ones own voice.

after school programs

There will be three main ways of getting additional music after regular school hours.

Private lessons are available to students who wish to get 1 on 1 attention in learning an instrument of their choice. This is truly the most effective way of getting ahead in music. We highly recommend piano as a starting point, especially for young students, but invite students to explore any instrument they would like to in their lessons.

After School Drumming Ensemble will be available to elementary-aged students who are interested in percussion. The Drumming Ensemble will give students the opportunity to perform in a unique ensemble of percussion instruments. Students will have the opportunity to explore rudimental drumming, bucket drumming, and groove-based pieces once a week after school. Students who sign up for this program will meet once a week after school to practice exercises and learn new songs.
